Train from Colombo to Kandy – Temple of the Tooth – Sigiriya

The Red Mosque in Colombo. This was about the only sightseeing we did while there.
The journey beings! After a hectic morning in Colombo, we were on our way to Kandy.
Sri Lanka is a green green country. As the train rose up from sea level, we passed through a bit of a rain storm.
The main attraction of Kandy. The Temple of the Tooth.
Elaborate entry stones acommpanied most significant temples.
Inside was a mad house. Throngs of people all lined up to see the resting place of the tooth.
Just outside the world buddist museum. The museum itsself was kind of interesting, in that it mapped out the progression of buddism, while focusing in on how it is treated in lots of different countries.
Bats! At twilight they swoop about and eat insects (yay!), but during the day, they chill.
This ridiculous guy.
Next stop Sigiriya…
Sigiriya rock fortress. You can just make out the swarms of tourists climbing it.
Our first monkey sighting of the trip!
This little guy looked shy, but he was a sneaky bugger and wanted nothing more than to steal food from unsuspecting tourists (they probably deserve it).
Off in the distance, a giant budda statue, just sticking there out of the jungle.
What remains of the lion gate; two giant paws.
This little hill was right next to Sigiriya rock. From where we were, we could see people climbing it. I imagine it provides a pretty great (and uncrowded) view of Sigiriya.
“The sky is ‘this’ big”
Natalie, looking coy after catching me attempting to photograph her unawares.
A rare moment, when Natalie takes over. Plus, that view.

My favourte view from up top. Something about the clouds, the lake, the mountain, and the jungle all mixed up together.
“Now point to that mountain over there…”
We initially climbed Sigiriya at the time that we did in order to be up top for sunset. After being at the top for about an hour, we decided that the clouds were probably going to obscure it (hint: they did). Figuring that, we decided to descend beforehand, and avoid the rest of the tourists who did stay for the sunset. I think this photo is better than the sunset anyway.
