Bangkok – Chiang Mai

First full day in Bangkok, with no plan we walked. Stumbled upon plenty to see, including canals such as this.
A ‘nice’ lady stopped us as we were walking down a street (where we were the only white people) and asked as where we were from. She told us it was our lucky day, and that the Temple of the Golden Buddah was having a special day. We said we wanted to keep walking down this street, see what we could see, and get some food. She told us that there was no food there, and to go to China town, to see the temple and get some food. She then summoned a tuk-tuk driver to take us there. We politely (with much insisting from her part) to bugger off. We then proceeded as planed, had a delicious lunch, and found this wild temple made in the shape of a Chinese Junk. Thanks ‘nice’ lady!
Walking our way towards the BTS skytrain, we came across a weird little gallery. It had all sorts of mixed media things in it. We didn’t really know what to make of it.
My hair was beginning to look pretty boofy, which meant it was time for a haircut. In the end, we both opted to get one, 700 baht for the two of us (which is about $20 USD), for the most attentive haircut I’ve ever had.
We did end up going to the Temple of the Golden Buddha, and it was pretty cool.
They like gold a lot around here.
This carving climbing out of the wall was pretty cool.
Plenty of golden decoration inside…
The temple’s namesake: The Golden Buddha.
Right outside the temple is the main (and historic) street of Bangkok’s Chinatown.
Fresh(?) seafood.
Our final night in Bangkok, we were looking for something to do, so decided to try out a Thai cooking class. It was ok. The recipes themselves were nothing special or secret, but we did get a really good rundown of Thai ingredients, and we did get the chance to make green curry paste from scratch, and made our own coconut milk/cream.
Our final day, before taking the night train to Chiang Mai, we spent checking out the largest weekend market in Thailand. It was wild. These cats were accurately living my dream after spending a few hours there.
Chiang Mai is a tourist hotspot. Really not our cup of tea. We spent a couple of days there. We went to a temple in the middle of the city, and it was crowded as hell.
I did mention they liked gold, right?
On our last day we opted to check out the temple on the hill above the city, as everyone raved about it.
Such gold.
A not-gold Buddha, wrapped in gold.
The temple had some pretty cool murals all around the edges. These were some of my favourites.

The stairway leading down from the temple. The handle is a dragon.
Dragon tail rail…
… ending in a dragon head which is spewing out several other dragons!
