Baphuon – Phimeanakas – Terrace of the Elephants – Terrace of the Leper King – Ta Keo – Ta Prohm

In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s part 1.

Next up was The Baphuon, right next door. This temple is a relatively young one, and was made with stone taken from other temples. It was never completed.

A brief intermission for a colourful schmetterling (hint, this is my favourite German word).
Next along the path was the Phimeanakas. We weren’t allowed to climb all over this one, so had to settle for a photo of this goofy guy.

The wall of the Terrace of the Leper King. The statue on the top of the terrace was called the “Leper King” because discolouration and moss growing on it was reminiscent of a person with leprosy, and also because it fit in with a Cambodian legend of an Angkorian king Yasovarman I who had leprosy. (Thanks wikipedia).
An elephant heralds the beginning of the Terrace of the Elephants.
A wide shot of the Leper King Terrace.
Poor bastards. Those guys up top have it made.
Such elephants.

By this point we’d swung back around to the entrance of The Baphuon. A long walkway suspended by stone columns.
Ta Keo. A crumbling temple with horrifically steep steps…
Natalie engages beast mode.
In this photo, I stand at the top of some steps overlooking a perfectly blue pond, while Natalie displays her upper body strength… right?

Ta Prohm is a great example of nature not giving a fuck. Here, the jungle is reclaiming this temple mercilessly.
