Kagoshima

– How to point at a map and say “Let’s go there, there’s an active volcano” and have it all work out perfectly.

The first sight of mighty Sakurajima
We had to take a ferry from Kagoshima over to Sakurajima. This is the ferry going in the opposite direction. They ran like clockwork.

A little street-side shrine along the walk to the observation point for Sakurajima. In hindsight, it would have been worth to hire push bikes, less for the the ride up, but more for the easy ride down…

Looking back at Kagoshima. You can see the coming and going of the ferries.
Natalie got pretty over it, but pushed on like a champ. The climb was definitely worth it.
A strange Japanese badger-dog. He was just doing his thing by the side of the road, and didn’t even care.
The observation point.
More comings and goings.
A panorama looking east beyond Sakurajima.

Channels to manage lava flow.
Down at a sea level observation point, there was this out of context statue. Yes, that is a guitar.
Stunning.
Delicious delicious Tonkatsu ramen. This was our reward for a hard days walking.
