Sunrise – Angkor Wat

First stop, the temple of Angkor Wat at Sunrise.
It was absolutely packed with people, so I focused away from the famous ‘take a photo of the temple reflected in the pool at sunrise’ and tried to get the silhouette of the temple.
As the sun rises, details of the temple start to emerge.
When it became clear that the sunset wasn’t going to get much better, we hightailed it into the temple to try and beat the crowds. Immediately as you enter, there is a wall carving of truly epic proportions.
It seems every inch of the temple is decorated in some way…

The outer edge is a corridor of columns, which run alongside the epic wall carving.
The top of the inner temple.
Natalie considers the line we were standing in to ascend the inner temple (signs said the wait would be 30 minutes, but it moved much faster).
More decorations…

From the top, we could see the crowds from the sunset dispersing.

As we left the temple, we discovered the reflecting ponds quite abandoned. I’m not sure we could have got a better shot earlier on, even if we had an unobstructed view.
The seven-headed naga of Cambodian myth.

Angkor Thom – Bayon Temple

The southern gate to the Angkor Thom complex. These impressive looking guys are hauling back a giant snake.
Stoic.
The gate was a glimpse of the style we’d see in much more detail at Bayon Temple.

Four faces, facing in all directions.
Bayon Temple. Every tower was decorated by a face or two, carved out giant bricks of stone…
… and also a few really cool carved walls.
