Epicly sized mounds of sand, and some wildlife

(check out Natalie’s post for more in depth details)

Once again, an empty road.
And once again, Natalie standing in the road.
These nests were everywhere, and impressively large.
Oryx!
We arrived at our campsite, and proceeded to chill out for a bit. This was the view from our tent.
The next morning, we got up nice and early (sunrise) to make it into the park.
We were one of the first vehicles, but were definitely not alone…
It was a little cloudy that morning, and during the drive out to the dunes, the rising sun put on quite a show.

It’s possible to do balloon rides out here. I think they’d actually be really cool. The dunes are impressive enough at ground level, but I can imagine they’re even more so from the sky…

It wasn’t long before we started getting real sightings of the dunes.

One of the benefits of coming at sunrise, is that you get the dramatic view of one side of the dune being illuminated, while the other is still in shadow.

Natalie, putting on a brave face (the hike up was an arse kicker).
You just can’t beat the colours.
From the top!

Heading further into the park requires a serious 4×4 vehicle. Luckily, there are “taxis” which will take you the rest of the way. This was taken from the “road”.

Deeper in, there was actually a little more vegetation.

And still bigger dunes!
We were seeking out the old lake bed “Deadvlei”.

And here it is! It is really impossible to convey just how otherworldly it is here.
A pretty common pass time for people attempting to climb the larger dunes is to give up part way, and run down the side.
Natalie, doing her best to capture the uncapturable.
We took a bunch of photos here, it was just impossible to stop!

Is there a more cliche desert photo than this? Bones. Dead tree. Dried up lake bed. Sand dunes.
Not all of the trees were dead.

The vegetation in Africa is wild. I’d never seen a seed this shape before.
On our way out of the park, we were treated to another sighting of an Oryx, who seemed to enjoy sighting us as well.
